Understanding Stroke

What is a stroke, and why does every second count?

A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, either by a clot (ischaemic) or a burst vessel (haemorrhagic). Brain cells begin dying within minutes.

What is a Stroke?

A sudden disruption of blood flow to the brain. Ischaemic strokes (clot-caused) account for ~87% of cases; haemorrhagic strokes result from a ruptured vessel. Both are medical emergencies.

How Does It Happen?

Risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, smoking, and obesity. When a clot blocks a brain artery, neurons lose oxygen; up to 1.9 million brain cells die every minute without treatment.

Why Act Immediately?

The treatment window for clot-busting therapy (tPA) is just 4.5 hours from symptom onset. Early specialist review dramatically improves outcomes the difference between full recovery and permanent disability.
